Frank Guida started Pop Warner on the Peninsula in 1958 with the Redwood City 49ers. Over the years, with the help of hundreds of dedicated volunteers, his mission is being kept alive. In 2004, Frank was named the National Pop Warner Volunteer of the Year and is a member of the Pop Warner National Hall of Fame. Known as "Coach Guida" by generations of boys, girls and adults, Frank was involved with the Redwood City 49ers Pop Warner football program in the Peninsula Pop Warner League for 46 years, until retiring in 2004. He was always in his element when surrounded by youth and every player was a "champ" to him. His unwavering support and dedication will always be an inspiration to us and will be in our hearts and minds.

Today, there are over 300,000 boys and girls, ages 5-16, participating in Pop Warner programs in the United States. Teams in Mexico and Japan have also joined the Pop Warner "family." There are now over 5,000 football teams, playing in eight different age/weight classifications.

Cheerleading programs have expanded beyond the traditional "sideline squads" to include performing groups such as majorettes, pom squads, dancing boots and pep squads. The first National Cheerleading Competition was held in 1988 and now shares the spotlight with the annual Pop Warner Super Bowl, being held this year in Walt Disney World.

There is also another competition which is an integral part of the Pop Warner program. This competition recognizes academic excellence, and being named an All-American Scholar is a coveted honor for any Pop Warner player or cheerleader.
