Latest Pop Warner Update on COVID-19
May 12, 2020
Dear Pop Warner Community,
As COVID-19 has impacted each region of the country differently, states are re-opening on varying schedules, with some already working to get back to pre-coronavirus levels of activity and commerce, while others are taking it slowly. But there certainly seems to be at least some light at the end of the tunnel. Wherever you are we hope you and your family are healthy.
As mentioned in our last update, we hope to have football, cheer and dance seasons this fall. In fact, we are planning on it and hope you are as well. But we need to take measured steps, accounting for the latest developments, just like schools, large public events and other sports leagues. That means we have to prepare for different scenarios, which include timing of the schedule and additional safety precautions for players, coaches, volunteers and families. We are working through it and hope to have a much clearer picture shortly.
We continue to take guidance from our Medical Advisory Committee, the CDC and local public health officials.
Without the ability to hold in-person registrations at this time, we encourage local Pop Warner administrators to utilize the relationship we have with Stack Sports to set up online registration.
We appreciate your support as we all continue to take the steps that we feel are most appropriate for our student athletes, their families and communities during this time.
The Frank Guida Scholarship fund was created on behalf of “Coach Guida” for children who are in need of financial assistance to play football and cheer for the Redwood City 49ers.Frank Guida was a President and Board member of Peninsula Pop Warner, in 1993 he was named Redwood City’s Outstanding Citizen. In 2004, Frank was named the National Pop Warner Coach of the Year, and was a member of the Pop Warner National Hall of Fame. Known as “Coach Guida” by generations of boys, girls and adults. Frank was involved with the Redwood City Jr.49ers Pop Warner football program for over 40 years, until retiring at the age of 84. He was always in his element when surrounded by youth, and every player was a “champ” to him. In January 2005, Frank was featured on KPIX, channel 5, as an exemplary youth advocate. His coaching secrets were a passion for the game, attention to detail and an insistence on discipline. His players learned to work hard and not back down to anyone – traits that were evident in Frank even as a young man. Coach Guida will always be an inspiration to us and he will be in our hearts and minds. His appreciation of his Italian heritage and wonderful sense of humor will be missed by all. There is a plaque and bench honoring Frank at the McGarvey practice field. On August 16, 2011, the City Council re-named and dedicated the old 49er field to the Frank Guida 49ers Field.
To continue the legacy of Coach Guida and allow all kids the opportunity to participate in football and cheer all donations are greatly appreciated and are tax deductible.
